Doubletop Mtn 7/30/17

With four days to hike in Baxter State Park, I wanted to hike some new mountains after I finished up my NEHH peaks in the park. One hike that I really wanted to do after asking rangers on past visits was Doubletop Mountain (3, 489 ft). The high point of the mountain is the north peak, but the slightly lower south peak has 360 degree views. The hike was a total of 7.83 miles with 2,738 feet of overall elevation gain. The weather was beautiful and sunny with just a slight breeze at times

  • Doubletop Mountain as seen from the Marston Trail head. The high point is the north peak which is in the center of the picture
  • The south peak (left) and north peak (right)
  • There is a lot of exposed rock on the side of the mountain
  • A panoramic shot of the mountain
  • The ranger building at Nesowadnehunk Campground. Day use parking is just before it on the right (it's where this picture is taken from)
  • After leaving the campground, the trail stays pretty mild with only a little incline
  • Crossing a very small brook as the trail gets a bit steeper
  • The trail heading downhill as it nears Doubletop Brook
  • The crossing of Doubletop Brook. The trail is easy to follow as it guides you where to cross
  • On both sides of the brook, the trail is pretty steep
  • It doesn't show well in this picture, but this small tree had a half dozen flies on it all fighting for a position in the sun so they could warm up this morning in this shady section of forest
  • After crossing Doubletop Brook, the trail stays pretty steep and rocky
  • Still climbing up the steep and rocky trail
  • A short section of mostly level trail is a nice break about a mile before the summit
  • One of many patches of Indian Pipe next to the trail
  • This patch of Indian Pipe was right in a small patch of sunshine
  • A little bit more easy hiking
  • Back to the steep and rocky conditions
  • Doubletop Mountain north peak. This rock is the high point of the mountain
  • Looking down the ridge to the south peak
