Elephant Mtn 6/16/15 (attempt)

On 6/16/15 I hiked Elephant Mountain (3,772 ft) in Maine as part of a 4 day weekend hiking peaks on the New England Hundred Highest list. This hike was 3.33 miles in length with a total elevation gain of 1,195 feet. The weather was cloudy and humid for most of the hike before turning to rain just before the end of the hike.
I found out after this hike that I went to the "old" summit which is the eastern peak while the true summit is the western peak

  • Parking for today's hike is in the area of another logging landing on Elephant Mountain Road
  • This cairn marks the start of the road I want to take
  • Further up the road is another landing
  • At this upper landing is the start of the herd path. This cairn and ribbon/flagging mark the start
  • Heading up the herd path following a narrow path through the trees
  • The herd path was a bit narrow in places, but easy to follow early on
  • The herd path going between some trees
  • After losing the herd path, I came to this open area near a brook. Unfortunately it leads to a much thicker area above it
  • After forcing my way through some thick spruce, I came into more open woods. In this area, there was LOTS of moose sign
  • Moose poop covers the ground. It appears that a moose was in this area for a couple weeks. From other sign I saw, I believe a mother had a calf here and stayed while it grew a bit
  • What I thought to be the summit of Elephant Mountain. I actually went to the wrong peak of the two option available
  • This is the path I came across and followed briefly to the summit
  • This more well defined path is how I plan to descend from the summit
  • Miles on the summit sign (it faintly says "elephant")
  • Moose poop right at the summit
  • An orange hat was also at the summit
  • Ready to use the herd path to descend
  • An "open" section of woods I descended through after losing the herd path
  • That's the direction I'm headed. No clear path to follow here
  • Back to the brook where I lost the herd path on the way up
