Equinox Mtn. 5/23/15

On 5/23/15 I hiked Equinox Mountain (3,840 ft) in Vermont. Equinox Mtn. is on the New England Hundred Highest list. This hike was 7.09 miles in length with a total elevation gain of 2,942 feet. The weather was sunny with temps in the low 50's on the summit. There was light wind on and off most of the day. The views from the summit were great and this was a nice little hike

Kiosk at the start of the trail

Equinox1027

  • Kiosk at the start of the trail
  • Looking up towards the summit from the base
  • A water storage tank is next to the start of the trail
  • An easy wide path for the start of the trail
  • The trail intersections where marked with posts like this one
  • The trail is quite easy to start
  • Looking up through the trees shows the nice blue sky today
  • There are a couple very simple camps along one of the trails
  • This partially downed tree was hung up above the trail
  • The trail is starting to get steeper
  • Footing is still nice along the trail with no big rocks or much for loose material
  • There were a number of large old trees along the trail
  • Getting a bit narrower, but still heading up steadily
  • Some painted trillium next to the trail
  • Painted Trillium
  • Above the path to the upper spring, the trail goes down to the width of most trails in the mountains
  • The trail still has a smooth surface to help make it easier
  • An old tree rotting next to the trail
  • The one tree that required stepping over
  • Once turning the corner to head up the ridge in the final half mile to the summit, the forest goes immediately from hardwoods to softwoods
