Goose Eye Mtn 9/10/16

The first day of a weekend in the Whites included a hike of Goose Eye Mountain. I went up the Carlo Col Trail, then headed north along the AT (Mahoosuc Trail) before coming down the Goose Eye Trail. The hike was 7.84 miles with 2,254 ft overall elevation gain and 2,834 ft total elevation gain. Weather started of mostly sunny, but became cloudier as the day went on with rain predicted for the evening and night. I got down about 30 minutes before a short rain storm came through. On the summit there was a 21 mph average wind speed with gusts up to 25 mph. It was 61 degrees with a 51 degree windchill

  • The start of the hike is about 8 miles up this dirt road... Success Pond Road
  • Looking up the road past the start of the trail
  • Trails are marked well along Success Pond Road. This is the sign right next to the road for the trails i'll be taking today
  • The start of the Carlo Col Trail follows a dirt road that was used for logging. Here, you take a left where the sign in the intersection tells you to
  • A closer look at the sign
  • Starting out as a gorgeous day so far
  • Just after the fork in the road, the trail goes left into the woods at this sign
  • The first water crossing, just into the woods. All the crossings were easy today
  • The second water crossing
  • At the second crossing, it this set of log stairs built into the hillside
  • A pool in the brook at the second crossing
  • A closer look at the stairs
  • Looking up the stairs and trail
  • Plenty of sign that the moose use this trail as well
  • The trail still isn't overly steep, but that will soon change
  • More wooden steps built further up the trail
  • Some of the stairs I came across today appeared to have been made out of nearby storm damaged trees. This cleaned up the area around them quite well
  • A short steeper set of stairs
  • Some of the tent platforms at the Carlo Col Campsite
  • The front of the shelter at the Carlo Col Campsite
