Middle & North Sugarloaf 11/10/2012

Middle and North Sugarloaf at 2,539 and 2,310 ft combine for one entry on the list of New Hampshire's 52 With A View. The hike to both peaks with a loop along the trestle trail is about 3.7 miles with 1,289 ft of elevation gain. The trail isn't overly hard and has great views for how low the peaks are. There is open rocks at both summits giving views in multiple directions. I hiked these peaks on 11/10/12 before hiking Mt. Willard. It started out mostly cloudy and slowly cleared off. Temps were cool to start and the wind was blowing pretty good from the west.

  • Continue a bit further, and things open up
  • North Sugarloaf doesn't has as much open rock as Middle Sugarloaf, but there is still enough for views in multiple directions
  • Haystack Mountain on the northern flanks of North Twin Mtn
  • A subpeak of North Twin Mtn
  • View east to Mt. Deception
  • The Presidential Range is still in the clouds
  • Looking southeast towards the Willey Range
  • Looking back to Middle Sugarloaf with Mt. Hale behind
  • View west from the open rocks at the summit
  • More open rocks at the summit
  • Mt. Deception
  • Looking over the open rocks
  • Heading back into the trees
  • The trail around the summit
  • One of the large glacial erratics (20+ ft tall) on the trail is split in two
  • Just think of how much force was required to split a rock like this
  • Just after crossing the snowmobile trail on the Trestle Trail, there is another large boulder
  • The overhang on the back side creates a big opening
  • Shortly after crossing the snowmobile trail, you loop back to it and follow if for a short stretch
  • Ice and wet snow on the rocks where I crossed the river
