Mt. Pemigewasset 1/5/2014

Mt. Pemigewasset (2,582 ft) is on the southwest edge of Franconia Notch State Park. I hiked it on the way home from a snowmobiling weekend on 1/5/14 after plans for a larger peak didn't work out. It's a gentle hike with good reward for the effort. I went up the Mt. Pemigewasset Trail starting at the Flume Gorge parking area. I came down the Indian Head Trail making for the full loop of the mountain before walking back up Route 3 to my truck. The entire hike was 4.529 miles with 1,342 ft of overall elevation gain and 1,661 ft of accumulated elevation gain. It took just about 3 hours from when I left the truck until I got back to it

  • The trail works it's way along the side of the hill to start
  • Coming up the Mt. Pemigewasset Trail, this is about how steep it gets
  • Nearing the top, the trail enters the conifers
  • All the needles still on the trees blocked quite a bit of light coming in
  • The trail all of a sudden comes out of the trees and onto the open ledges at the summit
  • There are nice views of South Kinsman from the ledges
  • South Kinsman looms just to the north west
  • Looking out over an approximately 150 foot drop off towards Mt. Wolf
  • The views are nice and open to the south as well
  • If you continue over the ledges, you are rewarded with limited views east to the Franconia Range
  • Mt. Liberty and Mt. Flume across the notch. The clouds have come in more since the first picture and the start of the hike
  • Mt. Liberty on the left and Mt. Flume on the right
  • The open area on the eastern side of the summit is spotted with trees
  • Mt. Lafayette to the northeast
  • Mt. Lincoln was the most blocked by the trees of the peaks across the notch on Franconia Ridge
