Mt. Weeks & South Weeks 9/8/19

With a predicted forecast of clouds in the northern whites it seemed like a great time to bag the weeks peaks as they don't have any views to be obstructed by the clouds. A morning rain shower on the way there and to start the hike made for a damp day though. I had water in my boots long before the first summit and I didn't take my camera out much on the hike up, but I liked this hike enough that I'll be back to do this one again in the dry. The hike was a total of 13.3 miles with 3,847 ft of total elevation gain

The trail leading over the summit of Mt. Weeks

  • The trail leading over the summit of Mt. Weeks
  • A small cairn and open area on the left marks the high point of Mt. Weeks
  • Lots of ferns line both sides of the trail. That made for wet legs while walking by today, but by this point my legs and feet were already soaked
  • The small cairn at the summit of Mt. Weeks
  • Miles on the summit cairn
  • Miles after climbing up a small tree at the summit
  • The summit of South Weeks
  • The summit of South Weeks
  • This short path leads to the actual high point of South Weeks which is probably 20-30 feet away from the trail leading past it
  • A small cairn marks the high point of South Weeks as well
  • The view from South Weeks
  • Lots of trees and fog at the summit of South Weeks
  • Miles at the summit of South Weeks
  • The trail goes right past the blow down, basically over the rocks that were under it
  • There were a number of blow downs along the trail closer to South Weeks that have been cleaned up. It would have been quite the mess if not for the trail maintainers
  • A couple of times the clouds tried to clear up some, but this was about as good as it got for the entire hike
  • Moss and lichen growing on a downed tree
  • The trail currently goes under these couple of blow downs. It briefly forms a bit of a tunnel
  • A nice smooth section of trail between South and Middle Weeks
  • Some bunch berry plants still has berries on them today. The red stood out against the see of green

Sometimes the lousy weather makes for really interesting photos. I love all the ferns and moss!
