North Brother, Fort Mtn, South Brother & Mt. Coe 7/28/17

Getting closer to finishing out my New England Hundred Highest peaks, I needed one more trip to Baxter State Park in Maine. The one hike left in BSP would include 3 NEHH peaks and a revisit to one 4,000 footer. I did a clockwise loop up to North Brother (4,151 ft) and then a bushwhack out to Fort Mountain (3,867 ft). From there it was back to North Brother and then on to South Brother (3,970 ft) and finally Mt. Coe (3,795 ft). The hike was a total of 13.0 miles with 5,029 ft of total elevation gain. The day started off cloudy, but one I got to the summits, the sun started to come out and it cleared off nicely

  • The peak(s) of Doubletop Mtn are in the clouds on the other side of the Tote Road and Nesowadnehunk Stream
  • Back in the other direction, the Marston Trail leads into the woods
  • The trail starts to steepen, but not too bad yet
  • This tree is bleeding blue. Or it could just be splatter from the freshly painted blazes on the lower sections of trail
  • A little more rocky and a little more steep
  • As the trail nears the split with the Mt Coe Trail, it levels back out for a while
  • Oops, look like the branch was in the way for blazing
  • Sign at the junction with the Mt. Coe Trail
  • I headed left, continuing up the Marston Trail
  • The Marston Trail crosses this brook at an easy rock hop to get across
  • The trail passes by Teardrop Pond
  • Teardrop Pond
  • Teardrop Pond
  • Teardrop Pond
  • Some of the exposed rock above Teardrop Pond. The small patch on the right actually has a brook flowing down over it
  • Since I was last here, part of the trail above the pond has been relocated because it was steep and eroded. This is in that section
  • A large rock that the trail goes past and then loops back around towards the top
  • Before the upper junction with the Mt. Coe Trail, the Marston Trail levels off again
  • Upper junction with the Mt. Coe Trail. Interestingly there isn't a sign saying what is to the right (South Brother and Mt. Coe)
  • I turned left again, heading up the remainder or the Marston Trail towards North Brother
