Pico Peak 2/4/17

Getting back to hiking the New England Hundred Highest, I did a winter hike of Pico Peak using the Shelburne Pass Trail and Pico Link trail. The hike was 5.90 miles with 1,820 ft overall elevation gain and 2,054 ft total elevation gain. The day started sunny but cloudy gradually worked their way in. Luckily there wasn't much wind since the temperature at the summit was only 8 degrees.

  • The trail head parking lot is directly across from the Inn at Long Trail. It was also very well plowed out after recent snow
  • Over the snowbank and past the kiosk is the start of the trail
  • The trail starts of quite gentle and easy
  • Boot prints of two hikers that headed out earlier than I did this morning. While there was a nice solid base under a few inches of fresh fluffy snow, I still wore my snowshoes to help pack things down
  • A nice straight section of trail through some hardwoods
  • Starting into a small patch of softwoods
  • The trail passing between two trees
  • A beautiful winter scene next to the trail
  • Back into the hardwoods and looking at the side hill next to the trail
  • Technically the trail goes around this downed tree, but most people were going under it since it was a straighter path
  • There are no longer any boot prints ahead of me. The other two hikers ahead of me had turned around by this point
  • The trail was easy to follow, even with the fresh snow on top of it
  • The entire trail today was blazed with blue paint on the trees
  • Snow clinging to the trees next to the trail
  • More snow is sticking to the trees the higher up the trail went. It was an enjoyable scene to walk through
  • Before the trail comes out to the ski slopes, it works through a couple gradual switchbacks
  • Starting to see some ski and snowboard tracks heading through the trees. Must be getting closer to the ski slopes
  • Walking through a snow covered forest
  • The blazes are getting a bit harder to see with all the snow on the trees
  • The trail briefly comes out onto the ski slopes which provides a nice view north. Many people only seem to hike this far up. I only saw one other hiker above this spot, but there was lots of traffic below it on the trail when I descended
