Sandwich Dome 8/22/20

Having been working 6 days a week for the past 5 months, I haven't had much time to get out hiking this summer. So with my first Saturday off in a while I decided I needed to get out for a hike. With weather predicted to be partly to mostly cloudy I picked a mountain with somewhat limited views. I've done this peak before so I took it as a chance to get some red-lining done by coming in from another side. This time I hiked up the Algonquin Trail and coming back down using the Black Mountain Pond Trail and Guinea Pond Trail before walking back along the road.
The hike was a total of 11.8 miles (13.2 with road walk) with 3,407 ft of total elevation gain

I started this hike from the season Sandwich Notch Road. I parked about 100 feet from the start of the trail, which can be seen just up the road from my truck here

  • I started this hike from the season Sandwich Notch Road. I parked about 100 feet from the start of the trail, which can be seen just up the road from my truck here
  • The start of the Algonquin Trail
  • Algonquin Trail sign
  • An early brook crossing. Today it was pretty much dry and easy to get across
  • The trail is very gentle and smooth to start. A nice way to get warmed up before the climbs start
  • This large tree fell across the trail and has been cleaned up enough to easily get by now
  • This tree was about 16-18 inches in diameter. Thank you to all the trail maintainers out there for work like this
  • Shortly after the down tree the climbing starts. Still easy to start with some stone steps built in too
  • More climbing as the trail makes a small turn to the left
  • This large birch tree appeared to be at least 20 inches in diameter. A large birch for the White Mountains as most were cut years ago or have blown over
  • A brief leveling off of the trail as it gets closer to Black Mountain
  • I always enjoy trails that go over exposed sections of rock like this
  • A nice flat break before the climbing starts back up
  • A short scramble up a rocky section where the trail gets its closest to Black Mountain
  • Weathered paint an a trail marker. Most markers in the White Mountains are just pained onto the trees now
  • Getting away from Black Mountain and starting to climb up the ridge line. This was the start of a steep rocky section
  • More exposed rock along the trail
  • A blanket of moss and lichen next to the trail
  • It looked like a thick plush carpet off in the trees
  • A close up shot shows that it might not be soft and plush as a carpet would be
