Scar Ridge 8/12/18

Not wanting this New England Hundred Highest peak to wait all the way until last in the list like it does for many hikers, I decided that this cloudy day was a good day to finally get Scar Ridge done. The peak only has views from the ski trails, so bushwhacking to a wooded summit in the clouds makes sense. The hike was a total of 10.05 miles long with 2,759 ft overall elevation gain and 3,358 ft total elevation gain. It ended up raining in the morning instead of the afternoon as expected, so this trip was a pretty wet one overall

  • Like most hikers, I started at the base of Loon Mountain resort and followed the access path to the ski trails
  • Looking back at part of the resort and the mountains behind it in the clouds
  • Looking back down the Brookway ski trail. This trail has an access road on it which makes for easy walking
  • Looking up the Brookway ski trail just before the top of it
  • I turned off the access road and started up the Lower Walking Boss ski trail. The grass was quite wet here as it was still raining lightly
  • Camp III Lodge at the base of the Lower Walking Boss ski trail
  • Looking down the mountain from the Haulback ski trail. Camp III Lodge can be see at the base of this ski lift
  • Looking back down at Base III Lodge

  • Haulback ski trail. I used this route rather than Upper Walking Boss because of it not being as steep
  • The top of the chair lift. This made for a nice place for a break before venturing off into the trees
  • A nice flat place to sit with cover the keeps the rain off of me
  • The start of the bushwhack as seen from the top of the chairlift. Just to the right of the trees with those signs is the path
  • The bootleg trail is easy to follow and has been cut out some
  • There were tons of Indian Pipe out in the forest today
  • The area of the bootleg path that I started the real bushwhack from. That is a blow down just up ahead
  • Sure, that looks like a good place to turn off of the path
  • The last few feet of the bushwhack leading up to the summit. Even near the canister the herd path isn't overly defined
