Snow Mountain (Cupsuptic) 6/11/16

The second hike of the day and 85th out of 100 peaks would be Snow Mountain - Cupsuptic (3,784 ft). The hike is a bushwhack, but follows multiple logging roads and a well defined herd path above that. The hike was 3.91 miles with 1,055 ft of overall elevation gain and 1,101 ft of total elevation gain. It rained while at the trail head then again briefly on the way up, but mostly is stayed cloudy and cool as it did for much of the day

  • Parking at a logging landing. This small pull off provides room to get off the road
  • From the parking area, head up the grassy (an muddy) road
  • After about 1/3 of a mile, you'll take a left onto another logging road. This cairn on the left helps indicate this
  • Looking up the road to the left
  • At the next intersection, you'll keep straight. Here another cairn and a wooden area indicate the way
  • View of the mountain from the wooden arrow
  • Further up, the main logging road turns towards the left while skidder paths head to the right. This small cairn indicates staying left on the road
  • Looking up the road. At the top of this is a dirt landing that is starting to grow in with ferns and grass. At that landing, you head to the back right corner and head into the logging cut there. The herd path is faint off of the skidder path
  • After following the left side of the cut and a faint herd path, I came onto the more well defined herd path just before it goes into the trees at this small cairn
  • The herd path to the summit was like this for most of its length
  • In the patches of ferns, the path is a bit harder to see. But you can still follow it if you are paying attention
  • At the summit. The canister and sign on to the right in the trees, and can be partially seen in this picture
  • The summit canister on a tree behind the blowdown
  • Summit canister and sign
  • Summit canister with a trowel and piece of moose bone behind it
  • Summit sign
  • A closer look at the trowel and bone
  • Miles gets his picture taken while perched on the canister
  • The path leading up to the summit
  • Headed back down, this is pretty much the only view
