Snow Mtn (Chain of Ponds) 6/14/15

On 6/14/15 I hiked Snow Mountain - Chain of Ponds (3,960 ft) in Maine as part of a 4 day weekend hiking peaks on the New England Hundred Highest list. This hike was 7.82 miles in length with a total elevation gain of 2,201 feet. The weather was sunny and warm with a light breeze

I checked out the parking area yesterday and was able to drive there just fine. This morning, a tree lies across the road half a mile from the parking area. Here is the tree after I trimmed off enough branches with my leatherman to get around the top of it

  • I checked out the parking area yesterday and was able to drive there just fine. This morning, a tree lies across the road half a mile from the parking area. Here is the tree after I trimmed off enough branches with my leatherman to get around the top of it
  • The hike starts out easy on an ATV trail with a gentle incline
  • The trail passes over 3 bridges along the way
  • Just before bridge #3 was this open area at a turn in the trail
  • On the edge of the open area was a "trail" marked by a small cairn. I have no idea where this went, but the only tracks I saw using it were moose tracks
  • After turning off the main trail, you hike up another narrower ATV trail
  • The tracks head off of the trail at a small cairn. This is to avoid some downed trees blocking the trail
  • I made a detour over to the pond after going through an intersection I should have turned at
  • This logging/skidder road is the one that will bring up past the trail to the summit
  • The trail to the summit crosses the skidder road
  • A small cairn helps mark the trail leading to the summit
  • The noticeable, but less used portion of trail heading back towards the pond from the skidder road
  • Heading up the trail. It was lightly maintained with most of the large obstacles removed
  • Some rocks the trail goes up and over
  • The path was very easy to follow in some places
  • Getting closer to the summit, the path is still well defined
  • At the summit is an old fire tower
  • The tower is now just the frame as the cab on top has fallen off to the side. It was still strong enough and anchored well enough to hold a person climbing up though
  • View to the east from the top of the tower
  • Kibbe Wind Farm is easy to spot to the east
