Stratton Mountain 2/21/21

I haven't had much time to get any winter hiking in so I took advantage of a clear, albeit windy, day to hit one of the New England Hundred Highest peaks. When I hiked this mountain before on a humid and hazy day I knew I would come back on a clearer day to see the views from the tower when they were better. The hike today was 7.51 miles with 2,068 ft of total elevation gain. I used the Long Trail in both directions coming in from Stratton-Arlington Rd

  • The trail sign for the start of the hike behind the snowbank at the parking lot
  • A packed trail leading past the sign is a good start for the day
  • Packed trail with little to no elevation gain to get the legs warmed up
  • A packed path through some nice open hardwoods
  • Crossing of the IP Road which is a snowmobile trail this time of year
  • Looking up the road/snowmobile trail. No one came by while I was here, but I could see a few of them through the trees while hiking to/from the crossing
  • Finally the trail does some climbing. Although it still wasn't super steep by any means
  • Snow built up on small trees looking like big blocks instead
  • The tracks winding slightly as it climbs
  • An interesting tree with snow built up on most of the limbs
  • Starting to get into more spruce trees and lower hanging branches
  • A tree with significant snow and ice build up on it that made it interesting looking
  • A closer look of the ice and snow building up on the tree
  • Still an easy to follow path through mostly hardwoods
  • Getting closer to the summit and into much more spruce, the branches got thicker, closer to the trail, and more covered in snow and ice
  • Snow crusted tree branches
  • Lots of snow built up on the trees
  • A closer look at the snow built up on the trees
  • Popping out at the top, the fire tower is in sight
  • The tower has a nice layer of ice and snow on it
