Waterville Valley Redlining 4/22/23

Since I haven't hiked all winter, I needed to get out and get some hiking done. I didn't really want to deal with deteriorating snow conditions up high and possibly needing snowshoes, so I decided to do some redlining on the trails around Waterville Valley. This would allow me to get some out and back trails like Fletcher's Cascade, but also come up with some kind of loop that would get me a lot of the smaller trails around the village that link well with each other. I went out with a rough plan, but kind of made it up as I went along as well depending on how the day was going and what the trails were like. In the end I checked off 10 miles of new trails on today's hike

The trail crosses here. I didn't read the guide book enough to expect this. After seeing the water wasn't that deep, I took off my boots and socks and hiked across the cold water to the other side where I quickly used a towel that is always in my pack to dry off my feet and get them back into the warm socks and boots

  • I was starting to wonder where "the boulder" was when suddenly the trail comes to this spot in the river with a large glacial erratic in the middle of it

  • Now on the other side after wading barefoot across the brook

  • "The boulder" and the brook crossing
  • I also went out the Big Pines Path so I could check that trail off the list as well
  • There are a few large pine trees on the Big Pines Path, but these three in one cluster seem to be the main attraction and where the trail ends
  • The trail drops down over those roots to end at the clump of big pine trees
  • A close up look at the bark of one of the pine trees
  • The bark on one of the pine trees
  • Some snow still remains on the Livermore Trail since it was groomed for skiing during the winter
  • The Norway Rapids Trail heads off to the right
  • The start of the Norway Rapids Trail
  • Where the trail crosses the stream. Another crossing I wasn't fully prepared for
  • Signs at the stream crossing
  • My feet were able to stay dry for this crossing thanks to this large dead tree across the stream
  • The biggest cascade near the top of the Cascade Path
  • The Cascade Path crosses the brook below the biggest cascade. There is also an alternate path that now leads up the western side of the brook to avoid the crossing. I needed both of them though for redlining today
  • The biggest cascade
