Waterville Valley Redlining 4/22/23

Since I haven't hiked all winter, I needed to get out and get some hiking done. I didn't really want to deal with deteriorating snow conditions up high and possibly needing snowshoes, so I decided to do some redlining on the trails around Waterville Valley. This would allow me to get some out and back trails like Fletcher's Cascade, but also come up with some kind of loop that would get me a lot of the smaller trails around the village that link well with each other. I went out with a rough plan, but kind of made it up as I went along as well depending on how the day was going and what the trails were like. In the end I checked off 10 miles of new trails on today's hike

  • Another impressive cascade while coming back down the Cascade Path on the eastern side of the stream
  • A much narrower brook crossing where I needed to take off my boots and socks again. I didn't trust the damp rocks right were the trail crosses below the cascade with the potential for slipping while crossing between rocks that weren't quite close enough to get between easily
  • It looks like a bird met its demise here
  • Feather are all that remains of this bird
  • At the top of Elephant Rock Trail where it crosses the ski trail (at the top of the lift) and becomes Greeley Ledges Trail
  • Waterville Valley Ski Area
  • Looking down the chairlift
  • A nice view of Mt. Tecumseh across the way
  • Coming up the Snow's Mountain Trail. The northern (or eastern) side of this loop looks a lot like this and was actually a bit hard to follow in a few places
  • A view through the trees shows the Osceolas on the left with the valley where Greeley Ponds are in the middle
  • The northern section of the Snow's Mountain Trail lacked blazes in many spots. And the ones you could find looked like this. It needs some updating at this time
  • At the view point at the top of the Snow's Mountain Trail
  • Sandwich Dome
  • Jennings Peak
  • Further down the trail is another outlook. This one provides a nice view out over Waterville Valley
  • Waterville Valley Ski Area on the side of Mt. Tecumseh
  • Part of the village of Waterville Valley
  • Part of the village of Waterville Valley
  • Part of the village of Waterville Valley
  • Route 49 goes through this valley. The only way in and out of Waterville Valley at this time of year due to seasonal road closures
