Waterville Valley Redlining 4/22/23

Since I haven't hiked all winter, I needed to get out and get some hiking done. I didn't really want to deal with deteriorating snow conditions up high and possibly needing snowshoes, so I decided to do some redlining on the trails around Waterville Valley. This would allow me to get some out and back trails like Fletcher's Cascade, but also come up with some kind of loop that would get me a lot of the smaller trails around the village that link well with each other. I went out with a rough plan, but kind of made it up as I went along as well depending on how the day was going and what the trails were like. In the end I checked off 10 miles of new trails on today's hike

  • The upper waterfall of Fletcher's Cascades
  • Just to the side of the upper cascade is this smaller cascade. You actually cross over this one on the trail to get to the bigger one
  • The smaller upper cascade. Notice the large chunk of ice standing on the left. It was larger than a big kitchen refrigerator
  • Some of the water cascading down over the rocks
  • While I was looking at my camera, the large chunk of ice from two pictures back crumbled and fell over. It made a loud rumble like thunder as it broke and fell over. It certainly got my attention as I was probably 20 yards from it at most
  • The smaller of the upper cascades. Now with a large chunk of ice fallen over
  • Coming up the trail, you get this view of the upper cascades as you finally get close. More impressive than I was expecting
  • While it doesn't look like much, this is the trail heading up next to the brook as you near the upper cascades
  • Looking upstream to the upper cascades
  • Some of the lower cascades. This is much more like what I was expecting to find on this hike
  • One of the lower cascades where the water mostly funnels off to one side of the rocks
  • A small staircase type of cascade in the brook
  • A small staircase cascade
  • A small staircase cascade
  • A small staircase cascade

  • Now down into the village of Waterville Valley, this is along the Boulder Path
  • The trail turns left here, while the XC ski trail keeps straight (to the right in this picture)
  • Sign at the turn in the trail. Currently the sign is leaning against the tree rather than having the post in the ground
  • Looking down the path after the turn
