White Cap & N. Kennebago Divide 6/11/16

Getting two more peaks in one hike (83 and 84 of 100), I hiked White Cap Mountain (3,856 ft) and North Kennebago Divide (3,775 ft). Both peaks are considered a bushwhack and are locations about an hours drive out logging roads. The hike was 5.44 miles total with 1,099 ft of overall elevation gain and 1,743 ft of total elevation gain. It was cloudy all day and started to rain lightly just before I got back to the vehicle

  • Parking is at an old logging landing
  • The hike starts up this skidder road towards a clear cut
  • Only about 200 feet up into the slash there will be a narrow path on the right that you want to take
  • The path is about the width of an atv and runs just to the right of the cut for a while
  • As it starts to get away from the cut, the path opens up a bit becomes mostly covered in ferns. The herd path is still easy to follow though
  • Purple Trillium along the path
  • All the plants along the trail were still wet from the morning dew
  • Getting up closer to the col between the peaks. In this area, the herd path shifts to the left while this open route goes straight. Follow the herd path as this route will soon just end
  • At the col, there is a split in the herd path. This cairn marks the path to the right and is the one you want to take to get to the summit
  • This is the path to the left. I didn't investigate where it goes
  • The path to the right is a bit narrow at times, and had water running down it as well in some places
  • This cairn marks where you want to turn off the path and go left onto the herd path to the summit. If you try to go past this cairn, the path quickly becomes much more grown in, so it's pretty obvious where to turn
  • The herd path starts here, over this blow down. Notice the small cairn on the blow down to help mark the route
  • The herd path to the summit was easy to follow
  • White Cap summit
  • The summit canister
  • Summit sign
  • Sign and canister. As you come up to the summit (an small obvious opening), these are on the back side a a tree on the right
  • The path leading to the summit
  • Back out on the open cut path, I dropped back down to around 3200 feet in elevation. This cairn marks the start of a herd path heading up to North Kennebago. I saw mixed reviews about this route, but thought I would try it instead of just bushwhacking through the trees hoping to stumble across the herd path to the summit
