08-06-2010 Climb

The 9th hike of the year up Mt. Monadnock. The weather was a little humid to start but that went away as the day went on. The wind was nice on the summit cooling you off and keeping bugs away. Went to one point of interest that I missed last year and hiked a couple trails I had not previously done. When all was done I hiked a little over 9 miles according to the park map I have on my wall in my office.

I started my hike from the Gilson Pond trail head

  • I started my hike from the Gilson Pond trail head
  • You get a nice view of the mountain from the pond, but can't see the summit
  • One of the rocky humps along the Pumpelly Ridge
  • Gilson Pond
  • It isn't long before you don't have much of a view of the pond though
  • The Birchtoft Trail is pretty easy walking from the start
  • Just before leaving the pond there is a section where the foot path is made of sawed in half logs in a wet area
  • The Birchtoft Trail has some uphills early on, but nothing too steep
  • The trail follows an old stone wall for a ways
  • There are a couple small rocky sections. I liked the dead tree standing right in the middle
  • Next to the trail I found a good sized rock that has been lifted completly off the ground by a tree's roots
  • As the Birchtoft Trail goes on, it starts climbing more steadily
  • It then comes out onto the Cascade Link Trail
  • Shortly after though I took a turn onto the Spellman trail
  • After a very brief level start, the Spellman trail immediately starts climbing
  • A fallen tree with mushrooms growing on it
  • A spider appears to have made a home where a branch use to be
  • The Spellman Trail is the steepest trail on the mountain
  • This picture gives you an idea how steep the trail is. The camera was held straight up and down
  • The is a small brook that runs near the trail for a good portion of it. I am sure it could be flowing pretty well if it weren't so dry this summer
