1. Mt. Monadnock

12-10-2010 Climb

17th hike up the mountain since the start of the year. I took the Dublin trail up and back with a walk around in the woods near the bottom. It was about 15 degrees with just a little wind. No snow yet, but there is getting to be ice on the mountain. It was clear enough in the morning that I could see the snow capped White Mountains on the way up, but once I got to the summit they were in the clouds. I also finally met Larry Davis this hike. He holds the distinction of the most hikes up the mountain (almost every day and over 320 so far this year) and the most consecutive days hiking the mountain (2,850)

  • There was lots of frost in the ground low on the mountain. Some of it was quite interesting
  • Rocks making for and easy water crossing low on the trail
  • Starting to get steeper
  • A yellow birch tree growing right next to a pine tree
  • Just starting to see some ice as the trail starts to get steeper and climbs
  • Some parts of the trail had lots of ice from the water leaking out of the saturated ground
  • Even with ice in the trail, stay on the trail instead of going around. Just be careful while continuing up
  • Ice on the rocks in a steep section
  • Most of the ice is at the top of the section
  • A small view from a rock next to the trail
  • You can just see over the tops of the trees
  • As you continue up there are more and better views
  • Looking to the Northeast and Dublin Lake
  • Pumpelly Ridge
  • One of the more odd things I have found on the mountain. When I got it home I determined it wasn't very accurate, but it still shouldn't have been left on the mountain
  • View to the Northwest getting near treeline
  • Looking down over the trail to the North
  • Dublin Lake
  • Looking to the East and Pumpelly Ridge
  • Interesting marks on the rocks caused by differing minerals
