03-04-2011 Climb

5th hike up for the year so far. I took a little longer route that brought me on some much less used trails in the winter. It was a gorgeous day out with plenty of sun, temps just below freezing, and some good wind. There was plenty of ice on things the higher I got and I saw my first ever Snowy Owl today nearing the summit

Starting out on a well packed Old Halfway House Trail

  • Starting out on a well packed Old Halfway House Trail
  • The trail slowly gaining elevation while following the side of the mountain
  • The Cart Path has had some traffic, but I still needed to put on the snowshoes
  • After a while in the open hardwoods, the trail comes to the edge of the softwoods. This is where it goes from being the Cart Path to the Mossy Brook Trail
  • Following the trail up next to the snow covered brook
  • Getting to the Marian Trail, it looks like no one has been out this trail for quite some time
  • My first glimpse of the summit from the Marian Trail
  • There was starting to be some ice on the trees
  • One of a few views to the Southwest on the Marian Trail
  • A few steep uphills were a little tricky with the snowshoes on
  • Nearing the Marlboro Trail
  • Looking down the Marlboro Trail
  • Looking up to the summit from the trail intersection
  • One of the cairns with ice on it
  • View to the Northwest from the Marlboro Trail
  • The Marlboro Trail has had less traffic than I would have expected
  • More ice on the trees
  • Everything had a coating of ice on it
  • It helped knowing the trail well as there weren't always tracks to follow
  • The hardest climb on the Marlboro Trail, just coming out of the trees
