05-06-2011 Climb

The 9th hike up of the year. It was a nice day out with increasing clouds near the end of the hike. The flies are out in full force in some areas it seems and there wasn't quite enough wind to keep them away. It was about 47 degrees on the summit. All total I did around 10 miles of hiking today on the trails.

Looking up the brook from the trail intersection

  • Starting at the Gilson Pond trailhead, I started out on the Pond Loop Trail
  • View up to the mountain alone the shore of Gilson Pond
  • The trail is never very far from the pond
  • At the end of the Pond Loop Trail, I headed up the Birchtoft Trail
  • A dip in the Birchtoft Trail
  • I then headed over the smooth and easy Hinkley Trail
  • Intersection of the Hinkley and Harling Trails
  • Looking up the brook from the trail intersection
  • Trail signs
  • The start of the Harling Trail is pretty easy
  • A moth that landed on my foot. He had bright blue wings, but wouldn't open them up when he wasn't flying around
  • The Harling Trail starting to go uphill more steeply
  • A rocky section along the Cascade Link Trail
  • Now on to the Red Spot Trail
  • A brook crossing early on the trail
  • The first viewpoint just to the side of the Red Spot Trail
  • The Red Spot Trail can be very rocky
  • Plants finding a place to grow anywhere they can
  • Part of a large rock on the trail that was drilled and broken apart
  • A view to the East along a steep section of trail
