1. Mt. Monadnock
  2. 2012

02-18-2012 Climb

My first hike of the year. With this winter's lack of snow, the mountain hasn't been quite as appealing for winter hiking. It was still nice to go up though. Temps were a little below freezing and there was a fair amount of wind on the summit, but not bad for this time of year.

Heading up the heavily traveled White Dot Trail

Monadnock7190

  • Heading up the heavily traveled White Dot Trail
  • There were some patches of ice down low, but not bad considering it is February
  • I turned off onto the Cascade Link Trail, which also only had patches of ice
  • A small tree partially blocking the start of the Red Spot Trail
  • A view point just off the side of the trail
  • Once on the Red Spot Trail, the ice and snow were pretty constant
  • Going up a long steep rocky climb. I put on the Microspikes here
  • In one spot I found a couple trees that have had their bark eaten by a porcupine
  • Looking closure you can see the teeth marks
  • The trail working over a field of large rocks
  • Out of the large rocks on a mostly flat section of trail
  • Boulders at the base of a small cliff next to the trail
  • View to the northeast from a large rock next to the trail
  • Looking over the trail at the trees
  • Looking down over the trail and to the northeast
  • View Southeast over the trees
  • Nearing the top of the Red Spot Trail looking up towards the summit
  • Looking up towards the summit
  • At the top of the Red Spot Trail looking to the north
  • Cairn at the junction of the Pumpelly and Red Spot Trails
