05-27-2012 Climb

For hike number 3 of the year, my wife and I headed up the Dublin Trail on Memorial Day Weekend. It was sunny and a bit humid, but not actually too bad. While the mountain was busy with hikers (over 2,500 just from the park headquarters), it wasn't as busy as I expected it to be. We started out a little after lunch time making it so most other people were headed down while we were headed up

  • Getting a later start in the day, the early hikers were already coming down and leaving, but the parking lot was still pretty full
  • Early sections of the Dublin Trail are pretty easy
  • Getting a little rocky and a bit wet
  • There was a little mud in places, but it was all easily avoidable white staying on the trail
  • Star Flower in a small opening of sunlight
  • The trail climbing up over large pieces of ledge in the ground at the first limited view point
  • A little bit of a view over the tops of the trees to the northwest
  • Another section of ledge to climb up and over along the trail
  • The trees are getting shorter. Almost able to see the Pumpelly Ridge
  • One of the interesting sections of trail as it works its way over the rock that makes up the mountain
  • The trail is a little rocky in places but has a section with a gentle incline between harder portions
  • Starting to go in and out of the trees now, there is a view over to the Pumpelly Ridge on the northeast section of the mountain
  • View to the north over Dublin Lake from the trail
  • There was still some Rhodora in bloom along the trail higher up
  • A closer look at the Rhodora
  • The newly renamed Jim's Junction where the Dublin and Marlboro Trails meet up going up the mountain
  • The junction was named after an avid hiker and past park ranger. He was also the trail adopter and maintainer of the Dublin and Marlboro Trails. While out west on a trip last year, he was tragically killed in what seemed like a random incident
  • Cresting over the ridge and out of the trees, the summit is now in sight
  • Almost to the summit and the smaller than expected crowd for a holiday weekend
  • One of two gliders that could be seen up above to the north
