07-22-2012 Climb

The 4th hike this year was with my wife. We took a longer and lesser used route to the summit that is gentle and enjoyable. We took the direct route back down though despite the crowds due to a schedule commitment. It was warmer and more humid than I expected with only a light and occasional breeze and some increasing clouds as we neared the summit. All in all the hike was about 6 miles.

  • Once past the Red Spot Trail, the Cascade Link is less used and goes over some smooth rocks
  • Higher up the Cascade Link Trail starting to get near the views
  • The first of many views to the east along the trail. Pack Monadnock is seen off in the distance
  • View to the southeast
  • Not even the end of July and this small maple tree is already red
  • View to the north higher up on the Cascade Link Trail
  • Looking over the trees to the north
  • Looking back down over the Cascade Link to the southeast
  • View north over Dublin Lake and Pumpelly Ridge from the Pumpelly Trail
  • View west over the trees from the trail
  • Looking down the trail over the Pumpelly Ridge
  • The first good view up to the summit from a rock next to the trail
  • View northwest down through the ravine on the north side of the mountain
  • The summit looks busy already
  • After some hiking and a difficult bushwhack, we got to the Pumpelly Cave or Megalitha. I have opened the door so my wife could go see inside
  • Pumpelly Cave
  • The door is quite unique and the hinge system is interesting
  • The door to Pumpelly Cave
  • Overlooking some open rock along the ridge
  • A large cairn marking the Pumpelly Trail
