10-06-2012 Climb

My 6th hike of this year would fall on Clumbus Day weekend. The mountain was busier than normal, but not overly bad. The temps were comfortable and the wind was averaging about 18mph on the summit. It was a bit cloudy today and a small series of rain showers came in just after I got back to the parking lot.

Early section of the Halfway House Trail

Monadnock2544

• Early section of the Halfway House Trail
• Some leaves have already fallen on the ground, but the small trees still have green leaves
• Crossing through a stone wall on the trail
• The saplings down low on the mountain were still green
• More leaves in the trail now
• Entering into a patch of softwoods along the Halfway House Trail
• A small birch tree across the trail ahead
• The few from the Old Halfway House Site. Still some color around
• The summit viewed from the Old Halfway House Site
• The Point Surprise Trail is a bit dark in places as it heads through some thick softwoods
• View East along the mountain from Point Surprise
• View south from Point Surprise with Gap Mountain nearby
• A flat rock face behind the trees right next to the Cliff Walk Trail
• A bright patch of color once up into the softwoods
• The Cliff Walk Trail following along the edge of the mountain
• The going around then over a large section of rock sticking out
• Don't forget to look at the small things. This was one of probably 4 caterpillars I saw today

I believe this to be a Hickory Tussock Moth Caterpillar
• Much of the Cliff Walk Trail is like this
• View of the summit from Bald Rock
• A line of people can be seen on the White Arrow Trail
