12-22-2012 Climb

An early morning hike for my last trip of the year. It was mostly cloudy all day with the clouds lifting enough for a short view on the summit. The wind was averaging 23 mph and gusting up to 32 mph. That made the 19 degree temperature on the summit have a wind chill of -2 degrees. The trails were a little more icy than expected, but not bad with traction aids

A couple trees near the trail with Bald Rock behind them

  • Starting up the White Cross Trail
  • Heading up the steep and rock filled trail shortly before sunrise officially hits
  • The first view point shortly after the sun rises behind the clouds
  • Looking back down the trail from the view point
  • A brief break from the steady climb
  • Getting higher, this section had running water in the trail
  • Up to another view with more ice on the trail
  • Looking up the trail heading back into the trees
  • A look over towards Bald Rock with some low clouds behind
  • Finally enough ice in the trail that I decide to put on the microspikes
  • My first view of the summit today
  • A cairn with some ice and snow on the ground around it
  • A closer view up to the summit
  • Ice and snow built up on the trees
  • A little bit of sun breaking through on the way up to the summit
  • Just enough snow and ice to be a little bit tricky where the trail crosses over mostly smooth rock
  • A couple trees near the trail with Bald Rock behind them
  • Looking South over Bald Rock from near the summit
  • Ice on the open rocks near the summit
  • Traction aids were very helpful on these conditions
