03-24-2013 Climb

For my second hike up the mountain this year, I took the Pumpelly trail up and back from Dublin Lake. Trail conditions were pretty chewed up from other hikers not wearing snowshoes, but it was a great day out with some clouds and intermittent wind. Visibility was at least the 62 miles required to see Boston. Temperature on the summit was 27 degrees with a 10 mph average wind gusting to 20 mph.

  • After only a few hundred feet, I decided the trail was too soft and putting on the snowshoes made the most sense
  • After around a mile of pretty easy trail, you finally come to the turn that heads you uphill and on to the mountain
  • At the top of the first long climb, the trail was very rough and chewed up
  • A closer look up the trail. The lack of hikers wearing snowshoes recently made for rough conditions through this entire section. Snowshoes would have left a much smoother and more well packed track
  • Starting to come up out of the trees some with views soon
  • A small open spot that provides the first view from the trail
  • Just a bit further, there is a much more open spot
  • View to the northeast towards Pack Monadnock
  • The trail following the edge of the rock along the ridge. One of the few humps on the ridge can be seen ahead
  • Following the ridge, the trail undulates quite a bit. Here are a few of the small ones
  • Down in a small dip, there is a quick steep section to come back out
  • The first trail intersection you come to. Two thirds of the way to the summit, but only one third of the way done for the day
  • Looking out over the Cascade Link Trail. One of the best trails on the mountain in winter
  • My favorite view of the summit from this trail
  • A closer look up to the summit
  • The view to the west from the trail
  • A long gradual straight in the trail
  • This straight was another chewed up section from the hikers without snowshoes
  • The views increase as you get higher up the trail and closer to treeline
  • Just one more hump before the summit
