11-08-2015 Climb

Another hike of Mount Monadnock using an indirect route that would get me to some places I wanted to visit and some trails I hadn't been on in a while. The hike was a total of 6.18 miles with 1,719 feet of overall elevation gain and 2,497 feet of total elevation gain. It was sunny out, but the temperature on the summit was only 37 degrees. With the wind averaging 16 mph and gusting to 21 mph, that gave the summit a wind chill of 25 degrees.

The Halfway House Trail was covered with leaves today

  • The Halfway House Trail was covered with leaves today
  • In some places, a few rocks were showing through the thick layer of leaves
  • Heading into a small patch of hemlock trees
  • This was one of my favorite trees on the mountain. It was a large old oak tree that had some holes in the base that allowed you look through it from multiple directions. It was impressive how large it was given the inner damage and that it was still standing. Sadly, it fell down earlier this year from that damage
  • The tree broke near the base where the most material was missing inside of it
  • You can easily see now that the tree was rotting on the inside
  • A large piece of the tree is still high in the air above the trail
  • While stopped to look at the tree, I noticed there are some nice new water bars here
  • The Halfway House Trail is closed above the intersection with the Cart Path due to heavy erosion that needs to be fixed. You best option here is to head right on the Cart Path and walk the short distance to the Toll Road
  • A new sign directing hikers up the White Arrow Trail near the intersection with the Royce, Monte Rosa, and Fairy Spring Trails
  • The start of the Fairy Spring Trail
  • Fassett's Mountain House
  • Some old carvings in the rocks near Fassett's Mountain house. It is believed this are the initials of the Fassett Family
  • Looking up the Fairy Spring Trail from the foundation of Fassett's Mountain House
  • Some other carvings in the rocks I noticed as I was ready to head up the trail again. I didn't spend enough time to see if I could decipher what they said
  • Some rocks that the trail works through as you climb
  • A large chuck of rock that has a flat face is right next to the trail
  • The Monte Rosa Trail continues to the left while the Smith Bypass Trail heads to the right
  • Just as it comes to the Smith Summit Trail, the Smith Bypass Trail goes past "The Tooth"
  • Looking over to Monte Rosa from the intersection. I'm headed their briefly next
