07-27-2016 Climb

With warm temps and higher humidity, I chose to hike around home today and hike some of the trails on Mt. Monadnock that haven't been on for a while. Today's hike was a total of 9.59 miles with 2,489 feet of overall elevation gain. At the summit it was 76 degrees with only an 8 mph breeze. Things were dry everywhere with most of the brooks dried up. Hiking got more comfortable as I got higher and more into the wind and slightly lower temps

  • The start of the Ravine Trail, coming from the remote campsite loop
  • Sign for the Ravine Trail
  • Gilson Pond from where the Ravine Trail meets the Pond Loop Trail
  • At a turn in the Birchtoft Trail. This helps keep hikers from going straight into some open woods
  • Looking up the trail from the turn
  • Birchtoft Trail sign at the intersection with the end of the Hinkley Trail
  • A closer look at the sign
  • Looking up the Birchtoft Trail at the intersection
  • One of the signs for the Hinkley Trail. The other sign is on the opposite side of the tree
  • An old oak tree had fallen across the trail some time ago. One of the cleanup crew decided to make a simple chair with some of the remains. The initials "WN" were also carved in with the chainsaw
  • Just part of the large oak tree that fell
  • Where one of the branches is rotting
  • Continuing up the Birchtoft Trail. It never gets very steep or rough
  • I've seen this rock before and was on the lookout for it today. The tree as grown around it and picked it up off the ground
  • This rock is about 1-2 inches off the ground and help up completely by the tree
  • At the end of the Birchtoft Trail where it meets the Cascade Link
  • The brief section of the Cascade Link I needed to hike. Less than 100 ft up the trail is the start of the Red Spot Trail
