05-16-2017 Climb

An after work hike from the park headquarters. I got to the summit a bit before sunset, but headed down to watch the sunset from further down the mountain. Doing a longer loop, I wanted to minimize how much hiking I needed to do by headlamp. Overall the hike was 5.10 miles with a total of 1,962 feet of elevation gain. It was 59 degrees on the summit and the wind was blowing a steady average of 11 mph

The trails heading up from the Park Headquarters are heavily used and show lots of wear. That is part of why I am hiking from here after work on a weekday, less crowds

  • Turning left onto the White Cross Trail
  • Start of the White Cross Trail
  • Now starting up the very rocky climbs
  • A bit of a break with only a small climb here
  • The trail passes over some large exposed pieces of rock
  • A large exposed section of rock
  • More rocks and more climbing
  • How nice of the mountain to provide a staircase. Of course you can see on the left that some people would still rather trample the vegetation and walk off to the side to avoid the rocks
  • A nice smooth section of rock from many years of water and feet passing over it
  • The higher you get the more views back out over the trail you get
  • At the top of the Smith Connector Trail that leads back down to Bald Rock. I saw a rabbit here on the other side of the trail, but he ducked into the bushes before I could get a picture
  • The Spire just below the summit
  • Looking south from the summit
  • Looking southwest from the summit
  • Looking east from the summit and seeing the mountain cast a shadow
  • Looking northeast from the summit
  • Looking north from the summit
  • Looking northwest from the summit
  • Looking north towards the White Mountains. Due to its distinctive shape, Franconia Ridge can be seen off in the distance
