09-29-2018 Climb

After some family stuff in the middle of the day, I took an afternoon hike up Mt. Monadnock. I did a bit of a longer route to the summit hitting some trails that have been abandoned for a short time now. There was plenty of sun this afternoon with a bit of wind and cooler temps at the summit.
Overall the hike was 5.85 miles with a total of 1,892 feet of elevation gain. For an extra photographic challenge today, I took all my pictures with my 24mm lens. This helped me slow down and look at the some of the smaller things on the trail along the way

Just after stating up the Halfway House Trail

  • Just after stating up the Halfway House Trail
  • A colorful leaf on the ground. More of these will be coming in the next few weeks
  • The trail crossing through a stone wall
  • Leaves coming off a small branch
  • Moss growing on a rock next to the trail
  • The texture of an old rotting log
  • These piece of an old branch stood out very well being in its own spot of sunlight
  • Ferns have a lot of different patterns going on in them
  • This old tree fell over a couple years ago. Lots of people really liked the tree. I always found in interesting that you could look through the base of the tree in four directions. Of course, that is ultimately what led to it falling over
  • The view from the Old Halfway House Site
  • The first glimpse of the summit
  • The sign is missing, but this is the start of the Sidefoot Trail
  • Small plants on the forest floor
  • A white blaze helping mark the trail
  • Ferns growing out of a crack in a bit rock next to the trail
  • Starting up the now abandoned Hedgehog Trail
  • One of the primary reasons for closing the Hedgehog Trail a few years ago was erosion on its lower sections and the lack of a good way to divert water out of it. There isn't much topsoil to help in building water bars
  • A curved pattern can be seen in this piece of rock sticking out of the ground
  • Above the eroded section of the Hedgehog Trail, it's actually a very nice walk through some open softwoods
  • Near the top, the Hedgehog Trail goes over some large rocks
