10-20-2018 Climb

For this morning's hike up Mt. Monadnock, I used the Pumpelly Trail. With early afternoon plans, that meant and early start to get this hike in using the longest trail on the mountain. Today's forecast was for clouds early in the day with some clearing later. That proved to be accurate as I hiked in the clouds a lot once gaining elevation and could only see 100-200 feet most of the time. The temperature at the summit was 42 degrees, but the 27 mph average wind (31 mph gusts) made for a wind chill of just 29 degrees. Overall the hike was 8.63 miles with a total of 2,867 feet of elevation gain

  • The first 1.5 miles of the trail is mostly gentle with some exposed rocks and roots
  • After the first 1.5 miles of trail, you encounter the start of the longest and steepest climb of the trail. In the last couple years some nice rock stairs have been put in to help minimize erosion through this section
  • Another look at the stairs at the start of the climb
  • In places though, this long climbing section is still an eroded mess
  • A fun rocky section to climb up and over
  • Getting to an early viewpoint, I see that I am already at the lower level of the clouds
  • A small patch of sun rays trying to get through the clouds
  • An exposed section of rock along the trail that makes for a nice view point
  • Lots of sections of the Pumpelly Trail are over exposed sections of rock
  • A short rocky climb
  • After about 3 miles of hiking, I hit the junction with the Cascade Link
  • Heading up the trail past the intersection
  • This spot has a nice view up to the summit... well, most days

  • Hiking along the trail through the clouds
  • One of the signs at the junction with the Spellman Trail
  • There is a lot of exposed sections along this trail
  • At the summit, completely socked in with clouds
  • Views for feet today
