01-01-2019 Climb

The first hike of the year and checking off New Year's day on the calendar for days I've hiked the mountain. A recent small snow storm made for a little bit of snow on the trail but temperatures near freezing meant some was melting and getting slushy. Higher up there was more and more ice and some sort of traction device was definitely needed. I made a loop from the Old Toll Road trail head using some trails I haven't been on for a while. I also had the bonus of running into three deer while hiking as well. It was mostly sunny, but the clouds did come in a couple times during the hike. At the summit the wind was blowing 29 mph with gusts up to 38 mph which made the temperature of 29 degrees feel like only 10 degrees. Overall the hike was 6.42 miles with a total of 3,163 feet of elevation gain

  • A thin layer of snow on the trail down low. It was also a bit slushy
  • The trail curving around a piece of ledge sticking out of the ground
  • Looking up at the blue sky
  • A section of trail with lots of small rocks as it heads into some spruce trees
  • When I stopped at the junction with the Cart Path, I saw this deer just into the woods
  • After a few pictures, the deer appeared to spook and another one jumped up as well. They only ran about 15 feet though
  • The sign for the Cart Path
  • Looking left down the Cart Path, the route I will be taking
  • One deer grooming itself while another walks around just behind some trees. What you don't see here is the third deer that didn't make itself known until the camera was away
  • Brook crossing along the Cart Path
  • A closer look at the ice and rocks to cross on
  • Where the Cart Path stops and the Mossy Brook Trail starts
  • Mossy Brook Trail sign
  • One of the cascades right next to the change in trails
  • Water was flowing out from under a layer of ice
  • Another cascade just off the trail
  • Water and ice in the cascade
  • The Mossy Brook Trail is pretty gentle while following the brook and heading through the trees
  • The start of the Great Pasture Trail
  • Great Pasture Trail sign
