1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Katahdin, Baxter Peak (42 of 67)

The 42nd peak of the year would be Mt. Katahdin, Baxter Peak at 5,267 ft. It was hiked on 9/8/14 with a distance 10.105 miles and 4,161 ft overall elevation gain with 4,376 ft total elevation gain. I had originally planned to go over to Hamlin Peak as well this day, but a steeper and harder than expected climb made me rethink this plan. I changed plans up on the mountain and decided to play it safe so I could do better descending over the difficult terrain. Unfortunately, this would end up meaning a second trip to Baxter State Park would be needed this year

A welcome sign as you enter Baxter State Park

  • A welcome sign as you enter Baxter State Park
  • From the park road, my first good look at Mt. Katahdin. For being Maine's highest point, you sure don't get many views of it
  • The western side of Mt. Katahdin was visible from Katahdin Stream Campground where I was staying
  • Partial view of the mountain from just in front of my campsite
  • The trail I will be taking tomorrow heads right up this. The summit is actually a bit beyond the area in site here. The top of what can be seen here is called the "Table Lands"
  • My tent setup at my site. I didn't bring much extra since my only plans were for hiking
  • The trail sign at the start of the trail in the campground. This section of trail is the end of the Appalachian Trail when northbound, or start when southbound
  • The hiker register where everyone must sign in upon their start up the trail
  • This interesting bridge crosses over Katahdin Stream on the trail
  • The trail then starts to head uphill more steadily
  • Katahdin Stream Falls next to the trail
  • Katahdin Stream Falls next to the trail
  • Katahdin Stream Falls next to the trail
  • The first view of the day
  • Doubletop Mountain off to the northwest
  • Getting further up the mountain, the trail starts to get more and more large rocks/boulders in it
  • Another viewpoint. Looking northwest towards Mt. Coe
  • The Owl to the northwest
  • Getting up out of the trees now, the view is less obstructed
  • The Owl in the foreground with OJI, Mt. Coe, South Brother, North Brother, and Fort Mtn in the background
