1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Katahdin, Baxter Peak (42 of 67)

The 42nd peak of the year would be Mt. Katahdin, Baxter Peak at 5,267 ft. It was hiked on 9/8/14 with a distance 10.105 miles and 4,161 ft overall elevation gain with 4,376 ft total elevation gain. I had originally planned to go over to Hamlin Peak as well this day, but a steeper and harder than expected climb made me rethink this plan. I changed plans up on the mountain and decided to play it safe so I could do better descending over the difficult terrain. Unfortunately, this would end up meaning a second trip to Baxter State Park would be needed this year

  • The Knife Edge. I plan to come back to do this trail
  • Pamola Peak and the Knife Edge
  • Looking out over the South Basin with the North Basin also in sight
  • A panoramic shot from the north to the south at the summit
  • South Basin
  • Pamola Peak
  • Hamlin Peak
  • A plaque at the summit giving some history of the park and mountain
  • Looking northwest as I head down the Hunt Trail
  • Looking back up to the trail crew. They use a cable system between two tripods to help minimize impact to the fragile alpine vegetation
  • A look back up to the summit. The hiker seen on the right is thru hiker Wikipedia on his way to finish his trek along the Appalachian Trail all the way from Georgia
  • Going down the Hunt Trail. Above treeline in places there are string "fences" to help keep hikers on the trail. This minimizes impact on the fragile alpine vegetation and allows for the slow re-vegetation process to happen where the trail has gotten too wide
  • Looking to the southeast to the nearby lakes
  • Millinocket Lake
  • One large lake that is made up of Pemadumcook Lake, Ambajejus Lake, Twin Lakes, and South Twin Lake
  • View to the west as I prepare to head down over The Gateway
  • Part of the climb down over large rocks. For this section, a metal hand/foot hold has been added
  • Looking down over a section of trail made up of many large boulders
  • The Owl to the northwest has some large rock faces
  • Another section of trail that goes over some large rocks
