1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Camel's Hump 8.5.2016

For my first 4000 footer in some time, I decided to head back to Camel's Hump in Vermont. At 4,083 ft, it's one of 5 peaks above 4000 feet in the state. I took the Burrows Trail up and the Long Trail and Forest City Trail down so that I could hike it from a different direction than last time. I also made a side trip out to some of the wreckage that still remains from the B-27 J Bomber plane that crashed in 1944 during a training mission. Most of the debris has been cleaned up or scavenged, but most of the two wings still remain on the mountain. Today's hike was 6.48 miles with 2,242 ft of overall elevation gain and 2,758 ft of total elevation gain. The sky was clear but it was a bit hazy and hot. The temperature at the summit was a comfortable 65 degrees with a 10-15 mph wind

• The parking lot at the trail head has room for 20 to maybe 25 cars at it
• The trail starts off a little rocky, but with only a little bit of incline
• Still heading up steadily
• Stone stairs built the help get up over this exposed piece of rock. Starting to get short steeper sections now
• Plenty of green around just before the forest turns from hardwoods to softwoods
• Now more steep and certainly rockier
• More of the steep and rocky. Getting closer though
• Leveling out some just before the hut clearing
• Informative plaque at the hut clearing
• The Long Trail as it heads north
• The Burrows Trail, that I just came up
• Looking up towards the summit. The hump above the trees isn't quite it yet
• A closer look at the hump above the trees
• Where the Long Trail heads south towards the summit. This sign is probably about 4 feet tall, but the last time I was here, you could only see it because someone had dug the snow out around it
• Informative signs and map
• Starting to come out of the trees just before the summit
• Looking up the trail towards the summit
• View to the west from the trail
• View to the north from the trail
