1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Cannon Mtn 6.15.2013

My second hike up Cannon Mountain (4,100 ft) comes almost 4 years after my first hike up it and the start of my hiking all of NH's 48 4,000+ foot mountains. This hike was on 6/15/13 and I again came up from the Lafayette Place Campground area. I headed up the Hi-Cannon Trail to the Kinsman Ridge Trail to the summit, then back down the ridge to the Lonesome Lake Trail and a loop around the lake. The hike was 5.491 miles with 2,359 ft of elevation gain. The weather today was warm and sunny with some clouds coming in later in the day. There was a good breeze on the summit, but much of the time on the trail, the contour of the mountain blocked it

  • Getting ready to cross under the highway and start the hike. The summit of Cannon Mountain can be seen on the right
  • After what didn't seem like much time, I was already at the Hi-Cannon Trail where I turned off
  • Coming up to a small brook crossing
  • The trail works around the side of a large glacial erratic on the mountain side
  • The lower end of the Hi-Cannon Trail is a series of small switchbacks, so you are always going along a side hill it seems
  • At the junction with the Dodge Cut Off Trail. I remember the sign being in better shape the last time I was here. Although that was almost 4 years ago
  • A tree that has blown over
  • Heading up the Hi-Cannon Trail from the junction with the Dodge Cut Off Trail
  • This tree looks like it was partially blown over and ripped up a number of years ago, but still has kept going strong. The roots on the bottom make a small jail cell like hole under the tree
  • The trail crossing over some uncovered rocks with a bit of water on them
  • On a steep section of hill side near the first view, the trail is a series of large rocks
  • Coming to a little bit of a view. Mt. Lincoln and Little Haystack can be seen here
  • Looking a bit further down the ridge to Mt. Liberty and beyond
  • Coming up to the ladder on the trail helping up over a steep section
  • At the top of the ladder, there are a couple of boards on the side of the trail to help keep you from sliding back down
  • The northern end of Franconia Ridge as seen from a rocky outlook along the trail. Mt. Lafayette, Mt. Truman, Mt. Lincoln, and Little Haystack Mtn (L to R)
  • Mt. Lafayette and Mt. Lincoln on the Franconia ridge across the notch
  • Looking down the notch some where Mt. Liberty blocks the view of Mt. Flume along the ridge
  • Lonesome Lake seen from the rocky view point on the trail
  • A closer look at Lonesome Lake just south of Cannon Mtn. The AMC hut can be seen just off shore in the trees
