1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Cannon Mtn 9.11.2021

The annual Flags on the 48 memorial hike. For this year's 20th anniversary our team did Cannon Mountain again. We have a big flag and wanted to be able to use it for this anniversary. Weather for the day was sunny with some clouds at times. It was warm without being hot and there was enough wind to keep the flags flying quite a bit of the time. Today's hike was 4.75 miles with 2,421 feet of overall elevation gain

Starting to gather before the hike

  • Starting to gather before the hike
  • This trail starts off steep and stays that way for quite a while
  • One of the first views from the trail. Weather is looking good so far
  • Hikers coming up a wet slab of rock along the trail
  • Where the path leads down to the view point above the former location of the Old Man
  • The summit can be seen from the view point
  • The view south down through Franconia Notch
  • Mt. Lincoln across the notch already has it's flag up. Our group leader thought I was joking when I told him we could already confirm Lincoln had a flag up today
  • Interstate 93 leading up into Franconia Notch
  • I wandered down the rocks some to see what else I could get views of. This is looking back up to our group
  • Eagle Cliff can be seen across the notch while the sun is shining
  • The summit is within sight now
  • A small rocky outcropping to the south of the viewpoint
  • Our own personal videographer today. There is currently a documentary being made about the American Flag and what it means to people. The person doing it got some footage of us 2 years ago on the same peak. This year he asked someone to help him get some more as it was so windy last time and the audio wasn't the best. Here he is watching his screen while getting some drone footage of us
  • His drone flying nearby
  • Interstate 93 down below
  • Most of our group taking a break
  • Our videographer getting more drone footage at the summit
  • Jim getting some hardware ready for the first flagpole
  • Raising the first flag
