1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Carter Dome, South Carter, & Middle Carter (52-54 of 67)

Peaks 52 through 54 for this year would be Carter Dome at 4,832 ft, South Carter Mountain at 4,430 ft, and Middle Carter Mountain at 4,610 ft. I hiked them on 10-28-14 on a day that was cloudy with occasional showers. It was 36 degrees on the summits with wind gusting to 15 mph. The hike was 13.3 miles with 3,386 feet of overall gain and 4,634 feet of total elevation gain.

The Nineteen Mile Brook Trail is pretty gentle from the start

  • The Nineteen Mile Brook Trail is pretty gentle from the start
  • Nineteen Mile Brook runs right next to the trail
  • The trail is right on the brook's edge in places
  • The brook cascading over a few rocks
  • The one brook crossing I was concerned about being high. The bridge here washed out/away during Tropical Storm Irene. Luckily, someone has arranged some rocks and placed planks here to help out the hikers
  • Taking a left at the junction with the Carter Dome Trail
  • The start of the Carter Dome Trail
  • Just after crossing a brook, this is looking back at it. Just enough rocks to keep your feet dry
  • Another, smaller brook crossing further up the trail. This is a nice little spot with the cascade coming down
  • Working up through the switchbacks along the Carter Dome Trail now
  • Working up through the switchbacks on the way to Zeta Pass
  • At the intersection in Zeta Pass
  • Just 1.5 miles to Carter Dome now
  • But wait, this sign says 1.2 miles. According to the guide book, 1.2 miles is more accurate
  • Heading out from Zeta Pass
  • Skirting around Mt. Hight, the trail has a steady incline with a little bit rocky footing
  • Ice on the ground has been falling off the trees as the temps were just above freezing
  • A closer look at the chunks of ice I first came across. They got bigger higher up the mountain
  • Just before the summit, the trail levels out quite a bit
  • The summit has a small open area where a fire tower once was
