North Crocker, South Crocker & Redington (14-16 of 67)

Peak numbers 14, 15, and 16 of 67 peaks for this year would require a second trip to Maine. The peaks would be Crocker Mountain, (4,228 ft), South Crocker Mountain (4,050 ft), and Mount Redington (4,010 ft). They were hiked on 6/28/14 where the conditions were mostly sunny to start with increasing clouds. The hike was 10.616 miles with 3,350 ft of vertical gain.

  • Parking at a large pull off on Caribou Valley Road. I learned two weeks ago that my car doesn't have the ground clearance to make it quite all the way to the trail crossing
  • Where the trail crosses the road, there is a small cairn
  • The first mile of trail is pretty gentle with good footing
  • Informative sign at the Crocker Cirque Tent Site side trail
  • The trail is getting a little steeper now
  • Soon it got even steeper, and rockier
  • Coming out onto the Crocker slide
  • The trail goes up the side of the slide
  • A view of North Crocker from the slide
  • Crocker Cirque down below. The tent site is near this
  • A view up to the Bigelow Range. I was there just two weeks ago
  • Some other hikers heading over an open rocky area
  • Some large rocks to negotiate around
  • After the steep sections, the trail mellows out again
  • It stays at a more gentle incline up to the summit of South Crocker
  • The forest next to the trail
  • The trail sign at the intersection with the short path to the South Crocker summit
  • A small sign for the side path to the summit. We'll do that on the way back
  • For now, I'll continue along the trail
  • A patch of ferns down low in the saddle between the peaks
