2. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

For this hike I decided I would do something different. I parked my car at the Lincoln Woods Trailhead and took a taxi/shuttle up to the Cannon Mountain Tramway parking lot. I would hike from here going over the entire Franconia Range going over Mt. Lafayette (5,260ft), Mt. Lincoln (5,089ft), Mt. Liberty (4,459ft), and Mt. Flume (4,328ft) and finish back where I parked.
This hike was approximately 12.5 miles in length and had an overall elevation gain of 4,552 ft. I did this hike on 10-9-12 which ended up being cloudy, cold, and also windy to start. At the Greenleaf Hut it was 32 degrees with winds about 20-25mph gusting to 40mph. At the last summit for the day, it was 40 degrees and calm.

  • Fall like conditions down low on the hike
  • The trail squeezes between these large rocks. It isn't sup0er tight, but a bit awkward with a pack on
  • Getting higher, the trail starts to go up a series of switchbacks to keep from getting too steep
  • A few through the trees down the notch
  • A small view of the cliffs on Cannon Mtn
  • The trail as it crests up into Eagle Pass
  • Eagle Pass is an interesting place with the sheer rock wall on the left
  • A land slide on the southern end of the pass
  • A nice view south of Franconia Notch
  • The top of Cannon Mtn is now in the sun
  • After the pass, the Greenleaf Trail works around the back of a ridge and follows up the side of it
  • There are a couple switchbacks, but the trail is mostly straight
  • Nearing 4,000 ft of elevation, there started to be snow from the last two nights
  • It looks like the blue sky wants to show through at the Greenleaf Hut
  • The summit of Lafayette is in the clouds behind Eagle Lake
  • A small break in the clouds behind a revegetation area around the hut
  • AMC Greenleaf Hut
  • Alternative power sources for the hut. The windmill sounded like a train at times when the wind was gusting real high
  • Almost a view to the north from the hut
