Mt. Katahdin, Hamlin Peak (48 of 67)

My second trip up to Baxter State Park in Maine to finish up my peaks there. This would be peak #48 in my quest for 67 in one year. I started off at the Roaring Brook Campground and headed up to Chimney Pond. From there it was up the Saddle Trail, over the summit, and then back down Hamlin Ridge. The entire hike was 10.9 miles with 3,229 feet of overall elevation gain and 3,884 feet total elevation gain. Almost the entire hike was done in the clouds with off and on light rain. On the summit the wind was averaging 14 mph and gusting up to 23 mph. This made the 50 degree temperature have a windchill of 44 degrees

  • A bridge early along on the Chimney Pond Trail

  • The Chimney Pond Trail was like this for much of it's length. It alternated between short level sections and gentle inclines like this
  • One of the two Basin Ponds
  • The water here was very clear

  • There was a beaver out and about in the pond
  • Southern Basin Pond, on the side of the trail
  • A real nice bridge over a wet section that beavers seems to have created
  • This bridge was pretty long

  • It looks like the sun might try to come through. But it never did
