South Hancock & North Hancock (58-59 of 67)

Peaks 58 and 59 for this year would be South Hancock at 4,319 ft and Mt. Hancock at 4,420 ft. I hiked them on 11-22-14 on a day that started off sunny and gradually became more cloudy. The wind was averaging 6 mph and gusting to 13 mph which made the summit temperature of 19 degrees feel like 10 degrees. The hike was 10.1 miles with 2,264 feet of overall gain and 3,155 feet of total elevation gain.

  • On my way to the hike, I was treated to this nice sunrise
  • A bright sunrise to start the morning off
  • View from the parking lot at the trail head
  • View of the Osceolas from the trail head
  • The Hancock Notch trail follows an old logging railroad bed from the start
  • There are a few crossings along the way. Such as this one that could be done using exposed rocks
  • Heading further up the trail, still following the old railbed
  • The North Fork Hancock Branch river is right next to the trail at times
  • Some trees that have fallen over the river
  • At the intersection with the Cedar Brook Trail
  • Some of the signs at the intersection
  • Just after the intersection was this dip in the trail to cross a dry brook
  • Further up the Cedar Brook Trail, there are a few larger brook crossings. Luckily to can be avoided completely, while others like this one had frozen over enough to cross with caution
  • At the intersection with the Hancock Loop Trail
  • Starting up the Hancock Loop Trail after leaving the intersection
  • This rocky area of the trail had plenty of ice as a brook flows over it through the rocks
  • Another icy section of trail where water appears to seep out of the ground
  • Microspikes were helpful in this section
  • At the split in the Hancock Loop Trail. Having gone left the last time I was here, I headed right
  • A dog walks around at the split waiting for his owner to catch up. The trail starts up at a gradual incline before getting steep
