1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Hancock & Mt. Hancock, South Peak (23-24 of 48)

The 23rd and 24th mountains would be combined into one trip with the first being Mt. Hancock at 4,420 ft and then Mt. Hancock, South Peak at 4,319 ft.
This hike was approximately 9.2 miles in length and had an overall elevation gain of 2,555 ft.
They were hiked on 12-19-11 which was a cloudy, cool, and windy day. It was 14 degrees when I left the trailhead and it had warmed up to 32 by the time I got back. Wind was pretty strong all day and the gusts were strong enough to almost knock me over on Mt. Hancock in the open. I never saw another hiker all day.

A dead tree next to the trail

Hancock6364

  • Still a gentle incline with some icy sections
  • The North Fork Hancock Branch Brook running next to the trail again
  • Finally starting to climb a little more, but still not much
  • At the fork in the Hancock Loop Trail
  • 1028 ft of elevation gain in 0.7 miles to get to Mt. Hancock to the left, OR 927 ft of elevation gain in 0.5 miles to get to South Hancock to the right. Neither seems easy.
  • Arrow slide through the trees as I start my way to the left and up Mt. Hancock
  • My gear in the trail while I take pictures
  • Heading up the steep trail
  • Looking into the trees next to the trail
  • A dead tree next to the trail
  • Heading up some steep stone stairs with some sun trying to poke through
  • The only blue sky I would have over me all day
  • Some ice coming down over the step in the trail
  • Ice in the trail
  • The trail turning left some and getting less steep
  • View to the West through the trees shortly before the summit
  • View to the West through the trees shortly before the summit
  • Some of the snow on the trees
  • Mt. Hancock summit
  • View from the outlook over to South Hancock
