1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Jackson & Mt. Pierce 09.22.2012

Having only hiked the Presidentials as a complete traverse, I decided to head back to the southern end of the range for the day. I tossed in Mt. Webster since it is on the 52 with a view list and I hoped to get a nice view down into Crawford Notch. The clouds didn't clear quick enough for that, but it still turned into a great day.
The hike was 9 miles with a total elevation gain of 3,261 ft. It started off cloudy and breezy in the notch. On Mt. Jackson it started to clear and soon there wasn't a cloud around. It was in the mid 50's on the summits with about a 10mph breeze.

  • Looking west from the north end of Crawford Notch State Park, the skies are looking pretty clear
  • Looking down into Crawford Notch State Park, the skies are still completely cloudy
  • Mt. Tom behind Crawford Depot from the back side of Saco Lake
  • Only having come down this trail, I didn't remember it being this steep near the bottom
  • This steep rocky section is certainly something I remember though
  • View northwest over Saco Lake and the Highland Center from an outlook on top of a cliff near the trail
  • A little bit of color starting to show on the flanks of Mt. Tom
  • Crawford Depot, Saco Lake, and the Highland Center down below
  • Looking out from the top of the cliff viewpoint
  • Where the railroad tracks meet the road at the top of the notch
  • The railroad tracks and a small bridge at the base of a small cliff face on Mt. Willard
  • The brook that feeds down into Flume Cascade in the notch. This summer at the end of my Presidential Traverse, this brook was a great place to dunk my head in and refresh myself
  • The brook flowing down towards Flume Cascade
  • The intersection where the Webster Jackson Trail splits into the two branches heading to each peak
  • A nice little waterfall flowing into a pool in the brook that feeds Silver Cascade down below in the notch
  • The trail coming down to cross the brook was steep, rocky, and wet
  • The trail heading up away from the brook was the same
  • Smooth rocks along the Webster Branch of the Webster Jackson Trail were damp and slick from the low clouds and occasional rain drizzle
  • Getting closer to the ridge and the summit of Mt. Webster, the trail levels out some and gets easier
  • From the summit of Mt. Webster, I could only see a little over 150 feet
