Killington Peak (57 of 67)

Peak 57 for this year would be Killington Peak in VT at 4,235 ft. I hiked it on 11-15-14 on a day that was sunny all day long. The wind was averaging 11 mph and gusting to 17 mph. This made the 11 degree temperature become a -4 degree wind chill. The hike was 8.14 miles with 2,393 feet of overall gain and 2,691 feet of total elevation gain.

After being up away from the brook, the trail comes back down to old road near it

  • The small parking lot for the Bucklin Trail has room for 8 or so cars in it. I was the only one here to start the day
  • The trail starts out very easy
  • You quickly come to a bridge that crosses a small stream
  • The stream being crossed
  • A closer look at the nice bridge
  • Further up the trail, you leave the old road and go into the woods more
  • A series of gradual stairs along the trail
  • After being up away from the brook, the trail comes back down to old road near it
  • Heading onto a smaller path as we near the brook crossing
  • After crossing the larger brook, there is another smaller one that can easily be done on this bridge
  • The trail now heads uphill to the right. No more easy walking along old roads
  • The trail finally starting the climb
  • Continuing up the mountain, the trail stays pretty straight to start at a steady incline
  • Now into the softwoods, the trail levels out a bit for a while
  • Later the trail turns right and heads straight up towards the ridge, but still at a decent grade
  • Recent snow sits on the tree branches along the trail
  • With the recent snow, I was able to see this fresh paths though the snow from a small rodent
  • A little bit close look at that paths. The snow wasn't deep enough for them to be tunnels
  • At the top of the Bucklin Trail where it meets up with the Long Trail
  • The sign at the intersection
