1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mendon Peak & Killington Peak 5.26.2018

Getting back to peaks on the New England Hundred Highest list, today's primary goal was Mendon Peak (3,840 ft). Given the Proximity to a 4000 footer and a common bushwhack route, I decided to add on Killington Peak (4, 235 ft) as well. The route for today was old woods roads and bushwhacks until about a third of a mile from Killington. It was a bit warm and humid with a little wind. The bugs were horrendous with the only real break from them coming on the summit of Killington where the wind could keep them away. The hike was a total of 11.23 miles with 3,191 feet of overall elevation gain

  • The gate for the road next to the Bucklin trail head
  • The camp a little ways up the road
  • Past the camp a little ways is a clearing. The route you want to take is this one, straight ahead
  • Flowers in the clearing
  • The first brook crossing
  • I crossed using the rocks on the left
  • In the woods on the other side of the brook, this sign helps skiers know where to turn when coming down as another road goes off to the left
  • A closer look at the sign. I saw one of this above the second crossing as well
  • Looking back down the muddy woods road I followed
  • Looking up the woods road past the mud
  • Flowers along the trail. I'm not sure what kind of plant this is, but I believe it will make red berries where each flower is eventually
  • Back on the other side of the brook and heading up the woods road further
  • Looking back down the woods road. Easy to follow here
  • A picture of my pack on the ground. Looking closely at the picture I was able to count 33 different flies on the pack alone. And that doesn't count the ones flying around it as well. Needless to say, the bugs were horrible today
  • The third brook crossing
  • The road on the other side of the brook with a sign up in the trees
  • A closer look at the sign
  • Red Trillium in bloom
  • Two large Red Trilliums
  • Above the third crossing, the old road is steep here and now in the softwoods
