1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mendon Peak & Killington Peak 5.26.2018

Getting back to peaks on the New England Hundred Highest list, today's primary goal was Mendon Peak (3,840 ft). Given the Proximity to a 4000 footer and a common bushwhack route, I decided to add on Killington Peak (4, 235 ft) as well. The route for today was old woods roads and bushwhacks until about a third of a mile from Killington. It was a bit warm and humid with a little wind. The bugs were horrendous with the only real break from them coming on the summit of Killington where the wind could keep them away. The hike was a total of 11.23 miles with 3,191 feet of overall elevation gain

  • Greenery next to the trail
  • Dutchman's Breeches. I've seen the plant before, but hadn't seen them in bloom until today. Because of this, it was worth stopping in a swarm of bugs to get pictures
  • Dutchman's Breeches
  • Spring Beauty
  • Now into the switchbacks of the woods road
  • The bugs were bothersome while moving and as soon as you stopped they got even worse. While taking pictures, I had 8 flies trying to bite me with another flying around and one more down on my sock. And that doesn't include the other leg, arms, or face
  • There wasn't much for blowdowns along the switchbacks today. This is before the second cairn
  • The third cairn, a bit easy to miss. I started my bushwhack about 20 feet past this

  • The woods along the bushwhack just before getting thicker near the eastern peaks of Mendon
  • A view through the trees to Killington
  • The summit of Mendon Peak. #92 of 100 for the New England Hundred Highest
  • Not much for views at the summit
  • Summit canister, with register inside
  • Miles on the summit sign
  • The uneventful summit of Mendon Peak
  • The eastern slightly shorter peak has a rocky outcropping with views to the south and west
  • There were 6 turkey vultures flying around while I was at the outcropping. 5 of them can be seen here
