1. New England 4000+ ft Mountains

Mt. Abraham & Mt. Ellen 11.11.2017

After not hiking in Vermont for nearly a year, I came back to hike Mt. Abraham and Mt. Ellen. The last time I tried to combine these two peaks I turned around before actually reaching Mt. Ellen, so today was a bit of a re-do with the inclusion of hiking from the Battell Trail Head this time. To go along with that, I also knew where the plane crash on Mt. Abraham was this time so I could go visit that on the way back if I had time.
It was a bit cold today, and a recent wind/snow storm had created a number of blow downs along the route. In the end though today was an enjoyable hike over a completely snow covered route. Today's hike was 12.6 miles with 4,548 ft of overall elevation gain. The sky was mostly clear and the high temperature at higher elevations was probably only about 20 degrees

  • With some overnight flurries, and possibly some previous snow, today's hike would be in the snow from the start to the end
  • The trail head sign
  • Ice underneath the snow. It snuck up on me and caused me to fall
  • And easy to follow trail with a light coating of snow
  • The trail leading up and over some exposed rock
  • Snow resting on a fern that is still green
  • Striations in the rock can be seen some through the snow
  • The biggest water crossing of the day. There are two small brooks right next to each other
  • Looking up the brook
  • The brook flowing down the mountain
  • Ice has formed on and around the rocks
  • Continuing up the trail which is getting a bit rockier now
  • Starting to enter the softwoods higher up on the trail
  • It's starting to look like winter in Northern VT
  • Heading up through a tunnel of green passing through a thicker section of softwoods
  • Sign post at the Battell Shelter
  • Sign on the shelter
  • This is the trail as it comes into the shelter opening. It is currently blocked by a number of blow downs
  • Battell Shelter had blow downs all around it, but it didn't appear to get hit
  • Just up the trail from the shelter there were more blow downs across the trail
